Salud sexual en una ciudad joven

The final report is presented of the pilot project for design, implementation, and evaluation of the Sexual Health in a Young City (SHYC) project, a community intervention aimed at adolescents and youth aged 15-24 in two districts of Lima. The project is intended to improve information on prevention of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases including AIDS, encourage more democratic and tolerant relationships among young people, and empower young people to find solutions for their sexual and reproductive health problems. The first chapter introduces the project and presents current theoretical views of the sexuality of young people and research results on the sexual culture and experiences of young people in Lima. The second chapter describes the theoretical and philosophical framework of the SHYC program, its relationship to national and regional development and health policies, the objectives and characteristics of the interventions, and the original and revised evaluation designs. The third chapter presents results of a household survey and focus groups of young people, while the fourth discusses the other project participants, including the future promoters, local institutions, and the sexual and reproductive health services. Implementation and products of the program are then discussed, along with evaluation data including opinions of the project participants and evaluation of the sexual health workshops, the SHYC pilot network of services, and the community and internal evaluations. A final chapter presents conclusions and discusses limitations of the program.
