About
A best-selling work of fiction in 1901, The Helmet of Navarre is set in the times of Henri IV. In 1572 when his mother, Jeanne d’Albret, passed away, Henri became the king of Navarre, and in 1589 he, whose father was Antoine de Bourbon, became the first Bourbon king of France. Importantly, the sixteenth century was the time of the Reformation and saw an upheaval of religion. The novel found its way to Broadway’s Criterion Theatre, a Hammerstein entertainment hall demolished in 1935, on December 2, 1901. The original cast included B. Arthur, George Seybolt, and Arthur Barry.
