About
Two decades of government effort to 'roll back the frontiers of the state' in welfare, constrained by both economic and political factors, have resulted in a complex mix of public and private sector activity. This study is from the ESRC Research Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion at the London School of Economics, and explores the interaction of these sectors in different parts of welfare activity - education, health, housing, income maintenance and personal services, among others - setting out the background to policy options for the future.
