Die Union zwischen Lutheranern und Reformierten am Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts wird unterschätzt, ihre prägende Funktion für die meisten Landeskirchen in Deutschland ist meist unbekannt. Vermittlungstheologie und Liberalismus schufen unterschiedliche theologische Systeme innerhalb der Union, die historischen Respekt verdienen. Zugleich steht der Unionsgedanke heute im engen Zusammenhang von Ökumene, Bekenntnis und Entwicklung vor neuen Herausforderungen in den Verständigungsprozessen der "Uniting Churches".
