About
More than an icon of Brazilian modern architecture, Pedregulho is the realization of a dream born in the Department of Housing of the former Municipality of the People's Federal District, Rio de Janeiro, created in the 1940s. The project "Pedregulho" arose from the commitment and partnership of the engineer and urban planner Carmen Portinho and architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy, the Conjunto Residencial Mayor Mendes de Moraes (known as Pedregulho), is located in the district of Benfica, in Rio de Janeiro, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. It is a bold and innovative social housing project that has adjacent to housing services such as communal laundry, nursery, health center and market. After decades of neglect a restoration process was initiated in 2011, which, besides recovering the architectural heritage, gives self-esteem to their residents and rescues the original spirit of pioneering and flagship project. In 1947, only one year after being conceived, Affonso Eduardo Reidy's project was in the pages of the prestigious American magazine "The Architectural Magazine of Building.
