Virginia Artigas

Painter, printer, sculptor, designer, illustrator and poster designer Virginia Camargo Artigas (Sao Carlos SP 1915 - Sao Paulo SP 1990), with paper and ink, and her daughter Rosa Artigas, with words, weave a story that, more than centered on Virginia's political militancy and professional career as an artist, passes through the importance of her presence in the formation of young people involved with the labor movement and the resistance during the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship. With her husband, architect Joao Batista Vilanova Artigas, Virginia lived in a painful moment in Brazilian history. After overcoming her poor childhood and troubled formal education, she fought alongside her husband and companions against the oppression and brutality of this dramatic time. Always attentive to events, she made drawing and printmaking her favorite means of expression. She made illustrations for books, newspapers and for the "Fundamentos" magazine, as well as participating in feminist movements in Brazil and abroad. Her exhibition on torture runs throughout Europe, but was never exhibited in Brazil.
