Amherst Artillery, Albemarle Artillery, and Sturdivant's Battery

Amherst Artillery was organized 1861 and was also known as Captain Thomas Jellis Kirkpatrick's Company of the Virginia Light Artillery or Kirkpatrick's Battery. It served in the Reserve Artillery Corps under William H. Pendleton and was later assigned to Nelson's Battalion, which was composed of independent batteries where it may have been known as Company A. The Albemarle Artillery was also known as Everett Artillery and Albemarle Everett Artillery. It was organized in 1861 as Company G, then assigned to the 1st Regiment, Virginia Artillery, as Company H. In 1862 it became an independent battery under Captain Wyatt, but under the next captain it became known as Captain Charles F. Johnston's Company of the Virginia Artillery. Sturdivant's Battery was organized 1862 as an independent battery. In 1863 it was assigned as Company A (2nd) in the 12th Battalion of the Virginia Light Artillery. It again became an independent battery under the command of Captain Nathaniel A. Sturdivant until early 1865 when the battalion dissolved.
