The Bacon project

During the first lockdown, when the world went silent, I decided to use this time for what I always wanted to do, which was to study the work of Francis Bacon. I began to accurately copy his paintings. Initially only in ceramics. But at some point other technical solutions had to be found. I learned to enamel, to weld, tried to soak silk in silicone. For weeks I researched to develop the exact colors of the paintings in glaze and fought against gravity. Ultimately, twelve small ceramic installations were created in this way. But the actual result was rather the research itself. I have now published the results of this project in book form. Central to this is a text by Sacha Bronwasser, who spoke to me about the creative process. All twelve images as well as the twelve paintings by Francis Bacon are included in the book. The foreword is by French art editor and curator Richard Leydier Tijdens de eerste lockdown, toen de wereld ineen stil werd, besloot ik deze tijd te gebruiken voor wat ik altijd al wou doen, namelijk studie te doen naar het werk van Francis Bacon. Ik begon de schilderijen van hem nauwkeurig na te bouwen. In eerste instantie alleen in keramiek. Maar op gegeven moment moesten andere technische oplossingen gevonden worden. Ik leerde emailleren, lassen, probeerde zijde in silicone te drenken. Wekenlang deed ik onderzoek om de exacte kleuren van de schilderijen in glazuur te ontwikkelen en vocht tegen de zwaartekracht. Uiteindelijk ontstonden op deze manier twaalf kleine, keramische installaties. Maar het eigenlijke resultaat was veeleer het onderzoek an zich. De resultaten van dit project heb ik nu in boekvorm uitgegeven. Centraal staat daarin een tekst van Sacha Bronwasser, die mij sprak over het maakproces. Alle twaalf beelden zoals ook de twaalf schilderijen van Francis Bacon zijn in het boek opgenomen. Het voorwoord is van de Franse kunstredacteur en curator Richard Leydier
