Hazel was diagnosed with lung cancer at a young age, but this has not stopped her from enjoying life, or falling in love. Hazel meets Augustus Walters, who will become the love of her life. Hazel and Augustus do not let their illnesses stop them from doing the things they want to do, on the contrary, it seems to motivate them.
While the subject of this story is a serious one, Green who understands this, decided to go along with it because he wanted readers to acknowledge that life is also about suffering and loss. Green’s friend Esther lost her life to cancer in August of 2010, and while her loss brought pain to her family and friends, it also brought inspiration, particularly to Green.
