Fort bij het Steurgat

Onder Werkendam, vlakbij de Biesbosch, ligt Fort bij het Steurgat. Het is het sluitstuk van de ketting fortenparels in de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Het verdedigingswerk werd gebouwd in 1880-1882 ter afgrendeling van het 'Merwede-acces', met aan de ene kant de toegang via de Merwede en aan de andere zijde de kreek 'Het Steurgat'. Ooit was de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie het 'grootste geheim' van Nederland en ongenaakbaar voor de vijand. Omwonenden waren er niet welkom. Bij Fort Steurgat is daar weinig verandering in gekomen: als particulier wooneiland is het nog steeds niet vrij toegankelijk. De ombouw tot wooneiland is één element uit de historie van het fort. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog deed het fort dienst als interneringskamp voor foute Nederlanders. Ten tijde van de Koude Oorlog was het fort noodzetel voor de Scheepvaartorganisatie Delta (SOD) van het ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat. In 1994 is Fort Steurgat verkocht aan een particulier. Na de ombouw tot luxe wooneiland dreigde tijdens de ontpoldering van de Noordwaard het vrije zichtveld rond het fort te verdwijnen door de aanleg van een dijk. After the conversion into a luxury residential island, the free field of vision around the fort was in danger of disappearing during the depoldering of the Noordwaard due to the construction of a dyke.
