After W.C. Mulder established himself as an independent architect at the age of 23, he quickly developed into a man with many social functions and a well-filled portfolio of assignments. Within a few decades he will belong to the richest upper class of Leiden. He is active on the boards of housing corporations, educational institutions, church organizations and associations such as Freemasonry and the Nederlandse Handelsmaatschappij. Mulder is driven, committed and has boundless energy. Like a spider in the social web of Leiden, and not devoid of business acumen, he builds for the workers, the industrialists, the rich and the professors. His style is eclectic; his clients have an important say in the final design. His best-known and most personal work is the Leidse Volkshuis on the Apothekersdijk. In present-day Leiden there are still many buildings of his hand, often designated as national or municipal monuments, or belonging to a protected cityscape. Nadat W.C. Binnen enkele decennia behoort hij tot de rijkste bovenlaag van Leiden. Hij is actief in besturen van woningbouwcorporaties, onderwijsinstellingen, kerkelijke organisaties en verbanden als de Vrijmetselarij en de Nederlandse Handelsmaatschappij. Mulder is gedreven, betrokken en beschikt over een tomeloze energie. Als een spin in het maatschappelijk web van Leiden, en niet gespeend van zakelijk inzicht, bouwt hij voor de arbeiders, de industriëlen, de rijken en de hoogleraren. Zijn stijl is eclectisch; zijn opdrachtgevers hebben een belangrijke stem in het uiteindelijke ontwerp. Zijn bekendste en meeste eigene werk wordt het Leidse Volkshuis aan de Apothekersdijk.
