"Hoffentlich klappt alles zum Guten--"

A collection of letters written by two Jewish sisters (born in Lübeck) to their relatives in Shanghai between 1939-41. The introduction (pp. 11-48) traces the history of the family and discusses the collection and its significance. Bertha (b. 1905) and Dora (b. 1908) were two of six children from a family which originally came from Latvia. Their mother died in 1935, one sister and one brother emigrated to Palestine after the rise of the Nazi regime, one brother left for Latvia in order to study, and one sister emigrated with her family to Shanghai. Bertha and Dora remained in Lübeck; their desire to help other relatives delayed their emigration. Their last postcard is dated 18 June 1941. Dora was deported to Riga in fall 1941, and Bertha's traces end in the Warsaw ghetto in May 1942.
