About
In 2020, it will be 60 years since Congo became independent. During the period when Congo was a Belgian colony, hundreds of thousands of photos were taken. Images that showed the actual and moral superiority of the colonizer, sometimes consciously in the form of propaganda. Images that give us a unique look at what life was like in Belgian Congo and the way of thinking back then. The author searched for years in all kinds of domestic and foreign archives, including those of mission congregations, former colonial and commercial companies, for the very best photos on one theme: the relationship between whites and blacks, together in the photo. Most of them have never been shown in public. And the author associated those photos with stories and interpretation they represent, after all, the facts, the time frame and the starkly unequal relationships. All stereotypes appear: the black as a slave or boy, the white as a tyrant, the Christianization and the urge for civilization, the black woman as an erotic object, the good news show from the Belgian state ...
