Le terme de Pahouin est certainement impropre, mais il est commode. Il n'existe en effet aucune désignation africaine s'appliquant à l'ensemble du groupe de population étudié ici. Il tend à être adopté à l'occasion du mouvement de regroupement politique des tribus, parce qu'il ne donne la prééminence à aucune d'entre elles. Le congrès de Mitzic de 1947 réunissant des Fang, des Boulou,des Ntoumou, des Mvaé et des Fong, prit le nom de congrès Pahouin, Ntoumou, Boulou, Mvaé et Fong se refusant à être englobés dans l'appellation "Fang".
