Being in the BKR or 'in the Contraprestatie' as the scheme was called in the beginning, was a concept in the Netherlands in the years 1949-1987. The Visual Artists Scheme offered artists who could not live off their work a temporary income in exchange for works of art. The scheme was beloved by artists, more than 5,600 used it at any time, but the government found it too expensive and called it quits after 38 years. In 1987, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands owned 221,000 paintings, drawings, graphics, sculptures, jewelery, objects, videos, etc. More than 200,000 works have been donated to institutions, returned to the makers and transferred to the art lease. The National Service has kept 20,000 of them. They are loaned to museums, ministries, embassies and to exhibitions and events. In this book, richly illustrated with a selection of 100 masterpieces, Fransje Kuyvenhoven describes the turbulent history of this unique arrangement. Rightly 'a monument to the BKR?'
