"This book focuses upon the evolution of nationalist politics in the village and hinterland of Inniskeen, County Monaghan, from the third Home Rule crisis to the end of the Great War. Local nationalist leaders such as Bernard O'Rourke looked forward to participating in a constitutional form of Home Rule within the British Empire. However, by the end of the war, O'Rourke's political outlook had been transformed. This study illustrates how the impact of suspension of Home Rule, disillusionment within the Irish Party, the threat of partition, the 1916 Rising and the spread of separatist ideals converted O'Rourke from an Irish Party supporter to a Sinn Féiner"--Publisher's description.
