Full title: The chronicle of John Hardyng. Containing an account of public transactions from the earliest period of English history to the beginning of the reign of King Edward the Fourth. Together with the continuation by Richard Grafton, to the thirty fourth year of King Henry the Eighth. The former part collated with two manuscripts of the author’s own time; the last, with Grafton’s duplicate edition. To which are added a biographical and literary preface, and an index, by Henry Ellis.
Folio. ff. [1], pp. xxi, 607, [71]. Calf. Includes reproduction of original title page dated 1543. Contains bookplate of Sir Robert Peel.
Critical edition by Sir Henry Ellis (1777-1869) of a series of faked documents produced by John Hardyng (1378-1465?) to reassure Henry V of the formal submission to his English crown by all the past Scottish kings. The originals still exist, and were first published in Hardyng’s versified chronicle of England to the reign of Edward IV. Ellis used a 1543 edition of this work (see Bib# 4102832/Fr# 244 in this collection) as the copytext for the present work.
