After the fragmented encyclopedic vision of sentimental education, Flaubert's A Simple Heart was greeted with relief, so much is the narrative unity of the tale patent and accessible. It should not, however, obscure its constitutive duplicity: a mixture of causticity and emotion that allows the enjoyable strabismus of a catholic-atheist reading. The apparent simplicity is spiced up by nuggets of complexity of all kinds.
