Ce livre retrace le parcours d'Edmond Vermeil, l'un des pères fondateurs de la germanistique française, ayant reçu la chaire des Etudes germaniques à la Sorbonne en 1933. Il pratique sa discipline comme une "science de l'Allemagne" incluant une analyse politique lucide et critique. Il agit, après la guerre de 14-18, pour un rapprochement franco-allemand. Percevant très tôt la perversion de l'idéologie nazie, il entre en Résistance et perd sa chaire, qu'il récupère à la Libération.
