This work was edited by John Pinkerton, who in his "Ancient Scotish poems, never before in print [...] 1786" (vol. 1, p. cxxviii-cxxxi; see Bib# 435598/Fr# 661 in this collection) admitted the authorship of the second part of ‘Hardyknute’ and several of the other poems. The first volume is the corrected and enlarged second edition of Pinkerton’s ‘Scottish Tragic Ballads’ (1781, see Bib# 4103148/Fr# 658). It contains more forgeries. See also ESTC, T55179.
