Mélanie Klein (1882-1960) a véritablement fondé la psychanalyse de l'enfant. Elève et analysante de Ferenczi, puis d'Abraham, protégée de Jones, elle dispose donc contre l'hostilité des Freud, fille et père, de l'appui des plus puissants barons de la psychanalyse de l'entre-deux guerres. Elle pourra ainsi se maintenir dans l'institution freudienne et développer bientôt une doctrine et une pratique autonomes, et vite une véritable école directement concurrente de l'orthodoxie freudienne.
