In de periode 1450-1528 werd het Land van Ravenstein vanuit Vlaanderen geregeerd door achtereenvolgens Adolf en Philips van Kleef. Vader en zoon behoorden tot de hoogste Bourgondische kringen. Zij waren kind aan huis bij Filips de Goede, Karel de Stoute, Maria van Bourgondië en Karel V. De Vlaamse avonturen van Adolf en Philips van Kleef worden in dit boek indringend beschreven. Maar ook word ruimschoots aandacht besteed aan hun optreden als heer van het Land van Ravenstein. Voor de vestingstad Ravenstein is vooral Philips van Kleef uiterst belangrijk. Hij heeft de vestingwerken vernieuwd met het oog op de Brabants-Gelderse oorlogen. Het Philips van Kleefbolwerck (anno 1509), is het meest in het oog springende voorbeeld.
