About
Shark Heart is a beautiful book , encompassing the extraordinary story of Ava, who, at the age of 58, dropped dead in the doorway of her beautiful house overlooking Sunset Boulevard, and in the middle of a fast-paced, relentless life, that wasn't working for her anymore. After her ambulance ride, she was revived, then placed in a coma for two months. During all of that, Ava found herself talking to God, and negotiating a return to life, so that she could care for her then 11-year old daughter, Jade. Shark Heart is about the miraculous Heart transplant Ava received on her 59th birthday, and her subsequent journey back to life, where she created a non-profit, Ava's Heart, in order to get mo-cost housing for other people seeking organ transplants. Along the way, she met the most extraordinary people - from medical miracle workers, to other transplant recipients, to the donor families, whose loved ones gave the ultimate gift. Ava often says, "Someone else's death saved my life . . ." Shark Heart examines the stories of some of these people, writing the words that would otherwise go unspoken. And Ava, which her unbreakable new heart, is the glue that forever binds them together. This is a story of struggle and recovery, life and death, people we have never met but who we all know. It is science, medicine, faith, belief and transformation.
