About
Sketches the history of the small Jewish communities in the eastern Netherlands from the 18th century through World War II. Pp. 61-75 deal with German Jewish refugees in the Netherlands from 1933 on, and especially 1,500 Jewish children who stayed temporarily in De Steeg on their way to England and the USA. Mentions, also, Avegoor, a training camp for SS members, and Palaestina, a camp where 139 Jews were severely maltreated doing forced labor. Pp. 75-90 describe events during 1940-45 and German anti-Jewish measures. Many members of these communities were deported to concentration camps, a few survived in hiding, and some emigrated.
