In 1984 at the age of 81, Clyde published his first book A Heaven in the Eye, which won the Western States Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. That book went on to become one of the most critically acclaimed books of the year. It is the story of Clyde's early life from 1918 to 1934 and takes place in Oregon and Northern California.
