Né en 1912 à Vienne, Hans Maier (qui prit en 1955 le nom de Jean Améry pour témoigner de son attachement à la culture française) émigra en 1938 en Belgique où il s'engagea dans la Résistance. Arrêté en 1943, il fut torturé par la Gestapo comme résistant, puis déporté à Auschwitz en tant que juif. Après sa libération en 1945, il retourna à Bruxelles et s'y consacra à l'écriture - critique et littéraire. Il se donna la mort en 1978. Ce livre permet de mieux comprendre son oeuvre et confronte sa réflexion sur le génocide juif à celle de Primo Levi, Imre Kertész et Theodor W. Adorno.
