About
En 1598, la famille protestante de Jesse de Forest quitte Avesnes-Sur-Helpe (de nos jours dans le nord de la France) et le sud des Pays-Bas, afin de fuir les persécutions religieuses. Après un passage à Sedan, les parents de Jesse se réfugient en Hollande. Quant à Jesse, il entreprend en 1601 l'exploitation d'une teinturerie à Montcornet. Il doit, à son tour, quitter la Thiérache vers 1615 pour s'installer en Hollande. Là-bas, il assiste au départ d'émigrants vers le Nouveau Monde. Jesse décide alors de fonder une colonie en Virginie, à l'embouchure de l'Hudson, pour développer un commerce de fourrure avec les Indiens...
