Une oeuvre autobiographique, "hybride" dans la mesure où elle intègre des souvenirs (l'enfance italienne, etc), des lettres, des exposés factuels et de brefs récits (l'inventaire est fait par R. Martel). V. Robert a bien qualifié le style: réalistico-satirique. Un éloge du métissage culturel? L'auteur affirme avoir "utilisé le phénomène migratoire comme métaphore, pour exprimer une situation existentielle."
