About
The Bermuda Biennial 2016 is the 12th iteration of the exhibition series, and the second to embrace a theme. Sponsored by Bacardi Limited, the Bermuda Biennial serves as the Island's contemporary art nexus, from which innovative artistic expression is encouraged and observed. Bermudaœs historical heritage, its geographical remoteness and aesthetic, and economic resiliency, create a unique setting for a small but burgeoning contemporary art scene. This year's theme, It's About Now: memories of the present, led to a variety of artistic responses. In subject, artists tackle topical issues, such as environmental protection, globalization, and technology saturation. Others are more philosophical, with existential notions, poetic and / or theoretical references to time, memory, meaning. In form, expressions vary from photography to large scale installations, with materials including mirror, Mylar, and sewn fabric. Perhaps for the first time there is no painting, which is an important note for an artistic space grounded in plein air landscape painting.
