New York's Left Bank

This book is the first ever devoted to the community of some four hundred artists who lived and worked in the two blocks just north of Washington Square in Greenwich Village during the first half of the twentieth century. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Daniel Chester French, Thomas Dewing, Edward Hopper, Paul Manship, Gaston Lachaise, and Isamu Noguchi are among the best-known artists who maintained studios and residences there. The careers of many lesser-known artists are featured as well. Based on extensive new research and illustrated by numerous photographs, many published or identified for the first time, New Yorks Left Bank presents a lively and illuminating view of the heterogeneous, convivial artists community that flourished from about 1900 to 1950 and brings into clear focus the creative vitality of this important art center.
