Gibbon, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. London, 1788, IV, pp. 342 43n (‘a single word [...] detects the forgery’), who also traces the source to Lodovico Vives, and mentions the credulous acceptance, or ‘allowance,’ by Dodwell, J. G. Graevius, and J. G. Heineccius.
