Voor het eerst wordt een monografie gewijd aan Anthonie Pieter Schotel, een van oorsprong Dordrechtse schilder die zich beperkte tot vrijwel één motief: het water. Daarmee zette hij niet alleen de traditie voort van zijn illustere naamgenoten, de zeeschilders J.C. Schotel (1787-1838) en P.J. Schotel (1808-1865), maar ook van de belangrijke binnen- en buitenlandse schilders die in het Dordrecht van de negentiende eeuw hun inspiratie vonden (Jongkind, Turner, Whistler, Witsen).
