Vesting Woudrichem

Woudrichem, in de volksmond vaak Woerkum genoemd, is een oude vestingstad op een strategisch punt in het rivierengebied. Daar waar Maas en Waal samenvloeien om als Merwede gezamenlijk verder te gaan, ligt de versterking op de grens van Holland, Gelderland en Noord-Brabant. Woudrichem is onderdeel van de ijzeren vestingdriehoek samen met de vesting Gorinchem en Slot Loevestein; later werd daar Fort Vuren als vierde aan toegevoegd. Woudrichem is de zuidelijkste vestingstad van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, met veel monumenten die daarvan getuigen. Het authentieke karakter van de vestingwerken van de handelsstad Woudrichem, zoals die in de zestiende eeuw door Adriaen Anthonisz. zijn ontworpen en aangelegd, is grotendeels bewaard gebleven.
