About
National security, and within it Defense in particular, requires comprehensive and long-term perspectives. This study attempts to look at national security in all its interconnectedness, and to locate its main component - Defense - in its proper time-perspective. This leads to the concept of sustainability. Sustainable Defense seeks to meet the security needs of the present without compromising the ability to meet those of the future. A definition of national security has been offered which links it to the quality of life of the ordinary citizen, moving away from the usual State-centered viewpoint as well as well as from the indeterminate concept of 'core values'. What has been attempted is not so much to suggest solutions to national security problems as to suggest ways of viewing these problems.
