Jesús F. Contreras

New, different and original approaches about the life and work of the notable sculptor Jesús Fructuoso Contreras Chávez (b. Mexico 1866-1902), who despite losing his right arm as a result of fibrous cancer, is still considered the most representative sculptor of the 19th century in Mexico. Contreras was the author of monumental sculptors of historic personages in Guanajuato and Aguascalientes, the colossal bronze sculptures in the Paseo de la Reforma and the reliefs with Indigenous figures of the "Monumento a la Raza" (Monument to the Race) in Mexico City, although his greatest work is the marble sculpture "Tout Malgré" (Despite them) in MUNAL.
