Der systematisch angelegte Band erschliesst - unterhalb der 'Hochkunst' - eine internationale Bildkultur, die bisher bei Fach- und Kunsthistorikern wenig Beachtung gefunden hat. Alle Beiträge richten ihr Augenmerk auf die besonders reiche ikonographische Produktion des 'Jahrhunderts der Revolutionen' (ca. 1770-1871). Von Portrait- und Modestichen über politische Allegorien und Karikaturen bis hin zu geographischen Karten und populären Bilderbögen werden praktisch alle druckgraphischen Bildgattungen dieser erweiterten 'Schwellenzeit' (Reinhart Koselleck) exemplarisch auf ihre eigenen Produktions- und Rezeptionsbedingungen, ihre Erinnerungspotentiale und ihre europäische Vernetzung untersucht. Zu einer im Entstehen begriffenen interdisziplinären Historischen Bildwissenschaft leistet der Band einen grundlegenden Beitrag.
