About
"This monograph argues that educational reforms initiated by Maori people themselves will have a greater and more positive impact on Maori education and schooling crisis than the Tomorrow's Schools reforms. Te Kohanga reo and Kura Kaupapa Maori have developed outside of state schooling structures. Of importance here are questions related to the choices Maori parents have made in respect of what might count as an appropriate form of schooling given the freedom to make these choices for themselves. What should be taught? How should it be taught? Whose interests are to be served? ... The answers to these vital questions ought to inform state schooling generally in regard to [the] Maori schooling crisis in state schools. This paper seeks to discover what the key intervention elements contained in these Maori schooling initiatives are and how might they be used to transform the experiences in state schooling generally ..." -- Abstract p. [1].
