La France tient une place particulière dans l'histoire de l'indépendance du Kazakhstan. En effet, entre 1921 et 1941, Mustafa Tchokaï a mené à Paris la lutte pour l'indépendance de son pays hors de l'Union soviétique. Après la chute du gouvernement du Turkestan, dont il fut le Premier ministre, la France lui a offert un cadre favorable pour ce combat. Arrêté en juin 1941 par les Nazis occupant la France, il est mort à Berlin le 27 décembre 1941. Un ouvrage utile pour ceux qui s'intéressent à l'histoire de l'Asie centrale.
