Gedurende de wederopbouwperiode (1945-1965) werden veel panden gedecoreerd met mozaïeken, reliëfs en tegeltableaus. Eén van de meest productieve decorateurs was de Groningse keramist Anno Smith. Verspreid over heel Noord-Nederland zijn honderden werken van hem bewaard gebleven.
