Edward Bernays (1891–1995), a significant and contentious figure in the history of political theory and public relations, invented the scientific method of influencing and controlling public opinion, which he named "engineering of consent." He was a key member of the American Committee on Public Information (CPI), a potent propaganda machine that was assembled during World conflict I to package, market, and convince the American people that the conflict would "Make the World Safe for Democracy."
