In 1975 verdwijnt de Nederlandse kunstenaar Paul Koopman op de Atlantische Oceaan. Er zijn vele motieven bedacht voor zijn eenzame tocht over de oceaan in een piepklein zeilbootje, maar één motief overheerst: hij was op zoek naar zijn vader, dominee Koopman, die in 1944 stierf voor een Duits vuurpeloton. De roman 'De onderstroom' verhaalt hoe vader en zoon elkaar nog altijd zoeken. 'De onderstroom' is een ontroerende ode aan twee uitzonderlijke persoonlijkheden, geïnspireerd op de levens van dominee Bastiaan Ader en diens zoon, de kunstenaar Bas Jan Ader.
