Wood is one of the oldest materials in the history of construction and simultaneously one of the most modern. No other material has gone through such dynamic changes over the past few years. Hybrid wood products such as layered and fiber composites have vastly expanded its potential and use in construction. This anthology, the result of a major research project by Dr. Joseph Schwartz, Chair of Structural Design at the ETH in Zurich, explores the application of wood in today’s design, architecture and culture. Extensive and descriptive photographs document the incorporation of wood and wood hybrids in architecture, handicrafts, engineering, history, philosophy, anthropology and the arts.
