1762년(영조 38) 사도세자思悼世子가 죽음을 당한 후 1792년(정조 16)부터 1899년(광무 3)까지 이에 대한 실상을 밝히고 장조莊祖로 추존하기까지의 과정을 엮은 책이다. 권1 ｢임자록壬子錄｣은 1792년 사림들이 안동安東의 삼계서원三溪書院에 모여 대의大義를 밝히려는 논의를 정리하고 있고, 권2는 ｢진신제소搢紳諸疏｣, 권3은 ｢장교시일기藏敎時日記｣와 별록別錄, 권4는 김등金縢이 전말을 기록한 ｢계축록癸丑錄｣과 갑인ㆍ을묘ㆍ무오년의 사략事略, 1855년(철종 6) 사도세자 추존을 위해 영남유생이 만인소萬人疏를 올린 과정을 기록한 ｢을묘록乙卯錄｣ㆍ1899년(광무 3) 사도세자를 장조莊祖로 추존한 사실을 기록한 ｢기해록己亥錄｣으로 이루어져 있다. 김호영金浩永의 발문이 있다.
