About
"This conference on the lawyer and popular culture was the brainchild of Roy M. Mersky, Professor of Law and Director of the Law Library at the University of Texas at Austin. It grew out of two observations: that law and popular culture had become an area of serious academic study (e.g., an entire symposium issue of The Yale Law Journal devoted to the subject) and that lawyers were figuring prominently in an every-increasing number of novels, movies and television programs. Always the innovator, Professor Mersky decided the time was right to host the first forum devoted to the perception of the lawyer in popular culture. He assembled a program of fifteen experts, including academics and best-selling authors, who presented papers on the portrayal of lawyers and the legal system in the popular media. Nearly a hundred attendees enjoyed presentations on such varied topics as Gilbert & Sullivan at Law and 'B' Westerns of the thirties"--Preface.
