Orange captures the hopes, dreams, anxieties, and fears that these students have about their personal futures. By placing the study in the context of recent, major social transformations, Orange illuminates the uncertainty of the life planning process in today's risk society. He points out that many of these men and women seem to hold asymmetrical views about equality in marriage, and that some of the women envision that they may end up relying upon friends as a family support system.
