Le récit suit le parcours plein d’angoisses et d’aventures de trois forçats évadés du bagne de Nouvelle-Calédonie. Les compères se font tour à tour explorateurs dans le bush australien, chercheurs d’or, sont pourchassés par la police australienne, s’improvisent marins pour tenter de regagner l’Europe via l’île de Java, et obtenir enfin une révision de leur procès afin d’être réhabilités. L’auteur, qui vivait en Nouvelle-Calédonie, a publié un autre roman sur le bagne, La Tourbe, inspiré de faits réels. Le matricule 5350 a réellement existé : c’était celui de Jean Baptiste Bernard Léon Mathieu.
