«Записки на манжетах», отчасти автобиографичны и написаны в 1922–1923 гг. Главный мотив произведения – сложности и препятствия, возникавшие на пути писателя. Особый акцент делается на проблеме отношений Булгакова с властью. Автор подробно рассказывает о своей жизни на Кавказе, первых месяцах пребывания в Москве, дословно описывает диспут об А. С. Пушкине (Владикавказ, 1920) и свои намерения эмигрировать. При жизни Булгакова повесть целиком не была опубликована. В настоящее время часть текста утеряна.
