En dit is dan de biografie van een fabrieksdorp zoals ze er in Vlaanderen geen twee hebben. Een ruwe schets van een door het kanaal Gent-Terneuzen in tweeën gezaagd en door zware industrie en snelwegen omsingeld industrieel eiland. Het labyrintisch relaas van socialistische burgemeesters die van de vakbond zijn, van bezettingen en fabrieksstakingen, van gipsbergen en slibstorten, en van mémékes die weigeren gemeentetaks te betalen. Een relaas dat bijna een eeuw omspant. Centraal staat de komst van de Sidérurgie Maritime in de jaren zestig, die heel Zelzate de polonaise doet dansen. Sidmar katapulteert het fabrieksdorp definitief weg uit de negentiende eeuw. Het kleine universum staat plots niet meer op zichzelf, het ABVV verliest al eens een sociale verkiezing, de rode burgemeesters beginnen achterom te kijken en wandelen met enige weemoed de jaren zeventig en tachtig binnen.
