En 1954, le laboratoire "Chemie Grünenthal" développe une nouvelle substance médicamenteuse nommée "thalidomide", qui fut commercialisée dans notre pays sous le nom de "Softenon". Ce médicament était prescrit aux femmes enceintes afin de calmer leurs nausées. Peu de temps après sa commercialisation, les médecins remarquèrent une recrudescence de différentes malformations chez les nouveaux-nés dont les mères avaient pris ce médicament, soi-disant miracle, durant leur grossesse. La thalidomide sera commercialisée dans la plupart des pays du monde, sous différents noms, faisant 12000 victimes.
