About
My grandfather was born around 1890 and sometime before the break-out of the First World War he had joined the army as a bandsman, especially to play the trombone. When war broke out his unit was sent to France as stretcher bearers. This was apparently the usual practice during the early years of the War. During his first few months in France he kept this diary, which he managed to send home late in November 1914. His diary is a personal one, not a war diary as such. It records his reactions to the events he witnessed, both the horrific and the humorous incidents that arose. It shows the courage and resilience of the stretcher bearers, under atrocious stress.
